When God’s Worth Becomes Greater Than Our Convenience

David needed a place to build an altar to the Lord. Araunah offered him everything he needed—the threshing floor, the oxen, and the wood. David could have accepted the generous offer and presented his sacrifice without paying anything himself. But David refused.
“No, but I will surely buy it from you for a price; nor will I offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God with that which costs me nothing.” — 2 Samuel 24:24. David’s words reveal an important dimension of worship: if God is worthy, worship cannot always be governed by convenience.
There was nothing wrong with Araunah’s generosity. But David understood that this was his offering to God. If Araunah provided everything at his own expense, someone else would bear the cost of David’s sacrifice. David therefore insisted on paying.
